Duration of each sonata given: 84-86 minutes for all. Dedicated to the memory of Gioachino Rossini. Much corrected; non-consecutive pagination. Mixture of MSS and photocopies of copyist's MS. Sonatas originally located elsewhere, and brought together by Ogdon for the purposes of performance as "Kaleidoscope" - here numbered as "K-Sonata"; original sonata no.s given.. . ff.1-3 Title page, list of contents with duration and dedications, introductory phrase.. . ff.4-12 K-Sonata no.1 An American Sonata "Dedicated to my darling Brenda, from John for Christmas 1984" [piano sonata no.4]. Autograph MS. Pagination starts 32. Movements: 1 Allegretto Kansas Wheatfields; 2 Elegy for Sam Barber (Andante); 3 "In an old-time Dance-Hall" (Interlude); 4 Romance (Lento) (after hearing Ives' "The Alcotts"); 5 Finale (Allegro) (Barn Dance of the Old West). Dated "Nov-Dec 22 1984; revised ending Jan 4 1985". On back of p.40 [ie. f.37v] is sketch of sonata no.9 "in memory Ben W" variations - with ?variation 24 in B minor (f.38) noted "played by Brenda in the 1963 Bromsgrove Festival. . Pagination and exact sequence very confused.. . ff.14-29 Photocopy of copyist's MS of Piano Sonata no.4 "An American Sonata" dedicated to my darling Brenda, Christmas 1984.. . ff.31-49 K-Sonata no.2 in memory of Sir Anthony Berry [Piano sonata no.5] dedicated to Volodya Ashkenazy with love and affection from his old friend.
