Biographical history
Lady Evelyn Barbirolli (1911-2008) was an English oboeist and wife of Sir John Barbirolli, conductor of the Hallé Orchestra. She studies oboe under Léon Goossens at the Royal College of Music. She played in the Drury Lane Orchestra and then Covent Garden (conducted by Barbirolli) before moving to the Scottish Orchestra with Barbirolli before moving to the London Symphony Orchestra. She lived to New York with her husband before coming to Manchester in 1943 as Barbirolli was to become conductor of the Hallé Orchestra. She taught at the Royal Academy of Music after her husband's death.
