Biographical history
The Manchester Philharmonic Choir was founded in 1878 by G. Brand Lane, who later promoted concerts featuring other musicians. On the death of Brand Lane, H Newton Lane became sole promoter 1928/9. 1936/7 International Celebrity Subscription Concerts directed by Harold Holt. Subscription series, became Festival series in season 1915/6, renamed Festival & Celebrity series for 1924/5 season. No season 1925/6? Amalgamated with Orchestral series 1927/8. Orchestral series renamed Orchestral & Celebrity series for 1924/5 season. No season 1925/6? Amalgamated with Festival series 1927/8. Special Jubilee series 1928/9. Became Brand Lane [Subscription] Concerts in 1931/2 season; ?taken over for 1936/7 by Harold Holt to become International Celebrity Subscription Concerts. The list of performers reads like a Who's Who of 20th century music, including Butt, Paderewski, Pachmann, Rachmaninoff, Strauss.

Collected and presented by S.L. Johnson [a subscriber], date unknown. Many programmes kept in numbered volumes (one per series per season), 1-32. Johnson's gift has been supplemented with other donations to form a more complete set.
